My rule of alternation states that similar setups appearing sequentially tend to resolve differently. Its premise is that some degree of the second instance is formed in anticipation of resolving similarly. But that is self-fulfilling, so the eventual resolution is likely to differ. The observation is useful in a process of elimination, to narrow down the remaining likely resolutions.
